Urogynecology

Urogynecology

Urogynecology is a subspecialty of Obstetrics-Gynecology that deals with diseases of the female genital and lower urinary system (incontinence, prolapse of pelvic organs etc.). It is a subspecialty recognised by the medical societies in Germany.

Such conditions are not usually life-threatening, however they are a burden added on women's daily and sexual life. Modern therapeutic interventions, whether pharmaceutical or surgical, can offer a definitive solution to the problem in a minimally invasive way.

A correct diagnosis and targeted treatment represent key points in the treatment of these patients. The selection of the appropriate surgical technique requires deep knowledge, extensive experience and top surgical skills, as such urogynecological operations, which can be carried out vaginally, laparoscopically and robotically, are aimed at advanced level surgeons.

For a number of years, Mr. Gitas was director of the Urogynecology and Endoscopy Center of the University Hospital of Lübeck (UKSH) in Germany, treating the most complex and advanced forms of incontinence and prolapse of the pelvic organs. Treatment of these conditions was either vaginal or endoscopic, i.e. using either laparoscopic or robotic surgery, or a combination of both. The specialized techniques used included Laparoscopic Burch, TVT, 4- or 6-point vaginal mesh, endoscopic hysterolopexy using meshes, pectopexy , Amreich-Richter fixation and more. Dr. Gitas has been able to perform the anterior and posterior colporrhaphy (uprighting of the bladder and lowering of the intestine) endoscopically, i.e. without making incisions in the vagina, a technique that is performed in very few centers around the world. During his tenure as director of the well-known Gynecological Center of Berlin’s University Hospital Charité Campus Mitte, Dr. Gitas continued to care for patients with urogynecological problems.
