Breast Surgery

In Germany, mammalogy and breast surgery belong to the field of Gynecology. Their study, for at least 5 years, makes up an important part of obtaining the Obstetrician-Gynecologist qualification, and is also a presequite for the sub-specialty of Gynecological Oncology, which takes at least 3 years.

Benign breast diseases (mastalgia, fibrocystic disease) occur quite often, in about 50% of women over 30 years of age. Research has shown that more than half of women report some kind of breast discomfort, which may greatly affect their daily life. In addition, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women. It affects approximately one in eight women at some point in their lifetime and accounts for 25.2% of all newly diagnosed cancers. Therefore, any change in the breast is a cause for concern and requires a carefully targeted and precise diagnostic procedure.

All of the above suggest the necessity for prevention, by having regular routine examinations at a Specialist Mammologist. An early diagnosis of cancer will result in a significant reduction in mortality, but also an improvement of the quality of life of women suffering from benign breast diseases. There is continuous progress in the treatment of patients with breast diseases and as a result, the international guidelines are closely and constantly being monitored and yearly updated.

During his 11-year stay in Germany, Georgios Gitas specialized in Gynecological Oncology, which includes treatment of breast cancer as well as its plastic reconstruction. At the Schleswig-Holstein University Hospital of Lübeck (UKSH), he daily dealt with patients with complex cases of breast diseases. In addition, as the director of the Gynecological Center of Berlin’s University Hospital Charité Campus Mitte, he applied advanced techniques for the treatment of diseased breast tissue (such as sentinel lymph node navigation using a magnetic probe, local excision with preservation of the breast after targeted chemotherapy, radical recurrence surgeries with plastic reconstruction etc.). The Breast Center of the Charité Campus Mitte in Berlin is a global reference center.
